Recognition of Prior Learning - RPL
RPL Procedure. RPL is a key principle of the NQF particularly in as far as accelerated learning and ensuring the redress of past inequities is concerned, though not only confined to the use in these instances. Mentornet recognises learning that took place through formal, informal and non-formal means and in formal, informal and non-formal settings, for example:
In the case of RPL prior learning is acknowledged and through assessment credits are awarded to such prior learning. The learner is therefore not required to undergo more learning, and through assessment the learner is given credits. These credits are recorded and reported. The assessment of RPL involves:
- The application of NQF principles.
- The application of the principles of credible assessment.
- The application of the principles of the collection and quality of assessment.
- Assessment being planned and designed on the basis of understanding the requirements of the unit standard, part qualification or qualification that the learner is seeking credit for.
- Sourcing types of evidence as suggested.
- The use of various methods and instruments.
- The application of the assessment process.
- The application of moderation requirements.
Credentialing is not entirely dependent on time spent on learning. Emphasis is rather on demonstration of competence by learners. This makes it possible for the recognition of prior experience and learning. Once learners know what is required and feel ready, they can present themselves for assessment and/or submit the necessary evidence of having achieved competence in a number of ways. The credentialing is done in terms of the requirements of the unit standard, part qualification or qualification in question. The competence credentialed must be current.
Mentornet uses RPL:
- To identify learning gaps.
- To remove barriers to learning.
- As a basis for career path planning.
- To avoid duplication of training.
- To issue certificates.
The following conditions for RPL are adhered to:
- Assessment is done against agreed standards.
- Participation in RPL is voluntary.
- No downgrading as a result of RPL is allowed.
- RPL is done in English.
